Variational (referral link)'s trading app, Omni, charges no trading fee because it is also the market maker. Its liquidity provider, OLP, quotes every trade, takes the other side, and earns the spread. That design is how one cross-margined account lists 550+ markets, from small-cap coins to Nvidia, gold, and S&P 500 swaps, and it is why you should compare Omni's quoted price with other venues rather than its fee. Your USDC sits in an on-chain settlement pool on Arbitrum between you and OLP, and there is no KYC. Omni is still a private beta: you need an access code to sign up, and the US, Canada, and Taiwan are excluded, citizens included. The points are the other draw. Variational plans to airdrop 32% of the $VAR supply to points holders in Q4 2026, with no date, price, or conversion rate published.

Variational airdrop

Past token distributions to users, any points program running now, and what has been said about the next drop.

Variational has no token yet. It says $VAR launches in Q4 2026 with 32% of supply airdropped to points holders in proportion to their points, all of it unlocked at launch. Points are earned by trading on Omni and go out weekly until the launch. No date, token price, or points-to-token rate has been published. An account needs at least 1 point and must sign the $VAR terms to receive tokens, and the Terms let Variational change or withhold points at its discretion. Variational says it will use all revenue sent to its treasury to buy back and burn $VAR.

Running now

Omni points. Points go out every Friday for the previous week's trading, 150,000 a week, and Variational says they continue until the $VAR launch. The formula is not public: volume counts but is not the only factor, and Variational can remove points for inorganic activity. The program started on December 17, 2025 with 3M points given to earlier traders. A reward tier adds up to 5% for high 30-day volume, and referrers get 1 point for every 10 their referrals earn.

What comes next

  • Official

Variational set the $VAR launch for Q4 2026, later than its end-of-Q3 plan, citing strategic partnerships it has not named. 32% of supply will be airdropped in proportion to points and fully unlocked at launch, and unclaimed tokens will be burned. Team and investors hold 50%, locked for 12 months and then unlocking over at least three years, and an ecosystem reserve holds 18%. Before the launch, Omni leaves private beta and opens to the public. Variational on X: $VAR tokenomics and TGE timing

Our assessment of Variational

Strengths

  • No trading fee on any market or trade size. Deposits and withdrawals cost a flat 0.1 USDC with gas covered, so you never need ETH.
  • Crypto and traditional markets in one account. The same USDC margins perps on crypto, stocks, ETFs, metals, oil, and pre-IPO names such as OpenAI and Anthropic, plus swaps on equity indexes and commodities that hedge with traditional dealers and charge financing tied to SOFR or the futures curve instead of perps funding.
  • Your margin stays on-chain. Each trader has a separate settlement pool with OLP, and Variational says OLP never moves traders' funds to outside venues, only its own capital for hedging. The protocol has audits from Zellic and Spearbit and a bug bounty on Immunefi.
  • Nothing to fill in. Connect a wallet, enter an access code, sign a gasless message, and deposit USDC on Arbitrum.

Watch for

  • You trade against the house. OLP is the only counterparty, gets a last look at every order, and can reject trades when it hits its risk limits. If OLP runs short of margin, your position can be closed by a counterparty liquidation, Omni's version of auto-deleveraging. Variational says that if OLP became insolvent, profits it could not pay would become bad debt. OLP runs on the team's own seed capital, and a community vault is still on the roadmap.
  • Zero fee is not zero cost. The spread is built into every quote, funding runs on windows of one to eight hours copied from Bybit or Binance, and a liquidation closes the position 0.5% past the quote. Limit orders fill all at once or not at all.
  • Swaps keep market hours. They close on weekends and for daily breaks, and nothing processes while a market is closed, including stop-losses and liquidations, so a position can reopen well past your stop. Pre-IPO perps carry their own warning: prices come from other venues, and Variational can delist and force-settle them.
  • The airdrop is not a promise. The points formula is private, Variational can withhold points, and the $VAR launch has already slipped once, from the end of Q3 to Q4 2026.
  • The beta label is real. The Terms provide the beta "as-is", the trading API is not out yet, and admins can switch off trading. The country ban covers citizens as well as residents, so a US or Canadian citizen living abroad is excluded too.

How to start

  1. Check the Restricted Persons list. The US and its territories, Canada, Taiwan, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and four regions of Ukraine are excluded, along with US and Canadian persons anywhere. The app checks your IP.
  2. Put USDC on Arbitrum One in an EVM wallet such as Rabby or MetaMask. Bridge it from another chain or withdraw it to Arbitrum from an exchange. You do not need ETH.
  3. Open Omni (referral link), connect the wallet, enter an access code, accept the Terms, and wait while Omni creates your settlement pool. Then sign the login message. The access code is entered once, at sign-up, and a referral link fills it in for you.
  4. Deposit USDC. Each deposit costs 0.1 USDC and arrives in seconds. Pick a market, set leverage under that market's cap, choose cross or isolated margin, set a slippage limit, and read the quoted price and spread for your size before you confirm.
  5. To take funds out, withdraw USDC to the same wallet. It is the only destination allowed, and the fee is 0.1 USDC.

Fees

Omni, Variational's trading app, charges no maker or taker fee on any market or trade size. Every trade fills at a price quoted by OLP, Variational's own market maker, so the cost of a trade is the spread in that quote, which the order form shows for your size. Deposits and withdrawals cost a flat 0.1 USDC each, and a liquidation closes the position 0.5% past the quote.

  • Spread: Every trade fills at the price OLP, Variational's market maker, quotes for your size. The order form shows the spread before you confirm, and Variational's protocol keeps 20% of the spread traders pay.
  • Deposits and withdrawals: A flat 0.1 USDC per deposit and per withdrawal. Gas is covered, so you need no ETH.
  • Liquidation: A liquidated long closes at the quoted bid minus 0.5%, and a liquidated short at the quoted ask plus 0.5%.

Leverage and margin

Every crypto perpetual allows up to 50x. Perpetuals on stocks, ETFs, commodities, indexes, and pre-IPO companies cap at 20x, and swaps at 10x, with cocoa at 5x. The markets page shows each market's cap. Maintenance margin is half the initial margin at the leverage you pick, so lowering leverage on an open position can move its liquidation price closer. Positions are cross-margined unless you switch a market to isolated, and swaps are isolated only until they trade around the clock.

Markets and order types

Omni's public API listed 568 markets on October 12, 2026: 434 crypto perpetuals, 120 perpetuals on stocks, ETFs, commodities, indexes, and the pre-IPO names Anthropic and OpenAI, and 14 swaps. Swaps track gold, silver, oil, gasoline, copper, cocoa, US and Asian equity indexes, the VIX, and the dollar index, with financing tied to traditional rates, and they trade market hours and close on weekends. Perps trade around the clock. There is no order book: market orders fill at the quote, limit orders fill in full once the quote crosses your price, and trigger orders fire on the mark price. Take-profit and stop-loss orders fire on the mark or the quoted price, your choice. Limit orders do not fill partially yet, and open orders expire after 120 days.

Country restrictions

16+ countries restricted

The Restricted Persons policy, last updated April 20, 2026, bars the US and its territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Minor Outlying Islands), Canada, Taiwan, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and the Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Sevastopol regions of Ukraine. It also bars US and Canadian persons wherever they live, and the Terms, last updated September 11, 2026, extend the ban to citizens of a restricted country as well as residents. The app applies the list by IP address, and the Terms forbid using a VPN to disguise your location.

Identity checks

You connect an EVM wallet (Rabby, MetaMask, or anything on WalletConnect), enter an access code while Omni is in private beta, accept the Terms, and sign in with a gasless signature. No identity check is asked for to trade, deposit, or withdraw. KYC applies only to some payouts: referral rewards of $4,000 or more from the on-chain trader campaign, and trading competition prizes. The app checks your location by IP and shows a restricted-region notice to visitors from restricted countries.

Depositing

Collateral is USDC on Arbitrum One, deposited from the wallet you signed up with. The docs name no other route: funds on another chain have to be bridged to Arbitrum first, or withdrawn there from an exchange. Deposits are gasless, so you need no ETH, and each one costs a flat 0.1 USDC. Your USDC sits in an on-chain settlement pool between you and OLP, kept separate from every other trader's pool.

Withdrawing

Withdrawals send USDC on Arbitrum back to the wallet connected to your account, the only destination allowed. They are gasless and cost a flat 0.1 USDC. With positions open, you can withdraw only the balance above your margin requirement.

Referral program

During the private beta, an existing trader's referral code is the access code a new account needs. A referral link carries the code in the address, and the app picks it up for the access-code step after you connect a wallet. The referrer earns 5% of the spread their referrals pay, in USDC, and 1 point for every 10 points their referrals earn. Traders unlock a first referral code at $1M in volume and one more slot for each $1M after that, and the app rejects invalid or expired codes. A campaign running since August 12, 2026 also gives points to 10,000 listed on-chain trader addresses that sign up with a code and reach volume milestones.

Platform

Omni runs in the browser at omni.variational.io and is built for mobile browsers too. Variational publishes no native app and says none is needed: on a phone you can add Omni to the home screen as a web app, then link it to a signed-in desktop session with a QR code instead of connecting a wallet on the phone. A read-only API serves market data, and the trading API is not available yet.

OLP makes money on the spread between its bid and ask, then hedges the position it took on other exchanges. Variational's protocol keeps 20% of the spread traders pay, and Variational says it plans to use the revenue that reaches its treasury to buy back and burn $VAR. The spread is the price you pay, so compare Omni's quote for your size with the price elsewhere.

Is Variational safe to use?

Your USDC sits in your own settlement pool contract on Arbitrum rather than with an exchange, and the protocol has audits from Zellic and Spearbit. Against that, OLP is your only counterparty, the private beta comes with "as-is" Terms, and admins can halt trading. The founders, Lucas Schuermann and Edward Yu, ran engineering and quant trading at Genesis Trading, and Variational raised $50M led by Dragonfly in May 2026. Treat it as an exchange run by one trading firm and read the points under Watch for.

What is the difference between a perp and a swap on Variational?

Both are leveraged contracts settled in USDC. A perp trades around the clock and uses a funding rate to track its index. A swap is hedged directly with traditional dealers, which Variational says gives tighter spreads, charges daily financing set by traditional rates, passes through dividends, and trades only market hours. Swaps cap at 10x or less and are isolated margin only. Some underlyings, such as gold and the S&P 500, list both, so check which one you are trading.
